The UCLA Medical Scientist Training Program allows students to earn M.D. and Ph.D. degrees simultaneously. Because there is overlap in course requirements, the student can earn the two degrees in a shorter time than it normally takes to earn the two degrees individually. For example, some graduate courses may be taken as electives during the medical training, and the number of core courses in the Neuroscience curriculum is reduced because of redundancy with basic science courses in the M.D. curriculum.
